When we were up in Tacoma Trey had his regular GI checkup with his GI doctor and dietitian at Mary Bridge. He is back on track for his weight since we stopped the trial tube feeding ween at night that was unsuccessful.
His dietitian didn't make any adjustments to his tube feeds at this time. But we will try again when Trey is successfully swallowing more foods for his calorie needs. Trey has kind of been at a stand still with his progress eating. He is still doing a great job with tasting foods but continuing to struggle with feeling safe swallowing foods.
I have also noticed over the last month Trey's reflux has progressively gotten worse. I will physically hear him refluxing more throughout the day and he will cry while holding his throat which is heartbreaking. He was also waking up and crying in the early morning just around the time his night drip was finishing up and I can hear him refluxing. So his GI doctor made some adjustments with his medications which seem to be helping the little man out.
We did discuss several other medication options to help Trey with his reflux problems if the current regime we are on isn't working. His doctor did bring up possibly doing a 24 hr pH/impedance study in the future if we can't seem to get Trey's reflux under better control. This would require a small catheter to be placed through one side of Trey's nose and advanced into his esophagus. The catheter would remain in place for 24 hours and attached to a small monitor device that records how much Trey refluxes, how far the liquid comes up, etc. So we will see how things go and decide if that would be in Trey's best interest to have the study done.
It's hard because we obviously don't want to put him through anymore tests if we don't need to. But at the same time it would be helpful to know how severe his reflux is and possible save us time if a surgical procedure is necessary to get Trey to his goal of independently eating like a normal 2 year old little boy.
But in the meantime we are continuing with group and individual therapy and keeping in close contact with our GI doctor. Here are some cute pictures from one of his last therapy sessions.
